Moodle Mobile - What is it?

Access eCampus from your mobile device (tablet or phone).

Using Mobile Moodle you can:

  • access eCampus wherever you have internet or data access
  • read and send messages
  • read resources (though this is not easy from a phone)
  • view your grades
  • record photos, audio, videos on your mobile device and automatically upload them to eCampus
  • upload any files stored on your android mobile device and photos on apple devices to eCampus.

Setting up your mobile device

When you open Moodle Mobile for the first time this is what you will see:

To set up your Mobile Moodle you will need to enter the site URL for the South Metropolitan TAFE online learning website which is:

ecampus.polytechnic.wa.edu.au 

NOTE: You do not need to enter the http:// prefix

Click [  Connect!  ] below where you typed the site name.

Please check that you have entered the site URL correctly.

You will then come to this screen:

Enter in your eCampus username and password. Please ensure these are entered in correctly.

Click [   Login!  ]

Circled dashboard iconOnce your account has authenticated you will be directed to the My courses screen which lists all Moodle courses you are currently enrolled in. To see the main menu (or Dashboard) click the icon circled in the image to the right:

Here is where you may use all the available functions such as:

My courses: see all courses you are enrolled in.

Site home: view the eCampus front page with site news, logging in help and forums

Notifications: disaplys any notifications generated from the eCampus system (e.g. awarded badges, notifications of forum postings).

Messages: displays all messages that have been sent to you and lets you access saved contacts so you can message them.

Calendar events: view any current event from the calendars in any course you are enrolled in

My files: access photos, take photos, record audio and record video on your mobile device. Once selected the media will be automatically uploaded to your "Private files" area on eCampus. 

Website: starts your devices web browser and takes you to the eCampus website to log in (rather than using the app)

Help: directs you to the moodle.docs website where help files on any aspect of the Moodle LMS (which eCampus uses) can be found.

App settings: allows you to set the language, check space used, clear caches and check which version the app is.

Change site: can be used to make more connections to Moodle sites - usually only used if you have two accounts on eCampus or if you are also studying somewhere else that uses the Moodle LMS.

Your login details are saved so you do not have to enter your details again. Next time you start the Mobile Moodle app you will be placed wherever you last were in the App.

NOTE:
As Moodle Mobile stays logged in, for security purposes you should make sure you have either a PIN or fingerprint swype set up for accessing your mobile device.
 

Your login details are the same for computers on South Metropolitan TAFE campuses, eCampus , My Tech, Student Portal and Office 365 so remember if you reset your password all these logins will also change.

 If you have forgotten your password, click on the Lost password? link to reset your password.

Taking Photos Audio or Video

Do you need to submit photos, video or audio as apart of an assignment? Using the Moodle Mobile application you can record these media types on your phone or tablet and have it uploaded into your private files on eCampus. When you go to submit your assignment, you will be able to select these photos directly from your private files area and submit them.

Accessing media from the App

To:

  • access existing photos
  • take photos
  • record audio
  • record video

Upload a file from mobile deviceClick the large white + symbol at the top right. A new screen will appear.

Photo albums: gives you access to existing images

Camera: activates the devices camera

Audio: activates the devices audio recorder

Video: activates the devices video recorder

File: only available to android devices, allows uploading of previously recorded data.

You will be given the option to save or discard media that you record. Below is an example of a photograph with "accept" "retake" options shown.

Once the media is accepted it will automatically be uploaded to your My private files area. A success message will display to let you know once successfully completed.

NOTE: There are size limitations on eCampus. If the file is greater than 30 mb it will not upload.

eCampus access to Private Files

My private files is unique to each person so only you can access the files that are stored there. To manage and/or delete files from this area you need to log on to the main eCampus website and select My files from the SITE MENU, as shown below.

You can manage files here, deleting them, renaming them and downloading them.

To submit work you have stored in there into an eCampus assignment you need to go to the course the assignment is in, ask to [Add submission] and use the [Add+] files link to access and insert from Private files. See Chapter: Assignment submission.

Assignment Submission: Photos Audio or Video

To submit photos (or other media) which you have already taken via the Moodle Mobile App, you need to login to the eCampus website.

For assignments click on your assignment activity and click [Add Submission].

You will only be able to follow these steps for assignments which allow file submissions. Also, your lecturer may have set a maximum number of files you can upload.

Once you click [Add Submission] you will come to this screen, from here click on the Add... icon

Once you click Add a dialog box called File Picker will appear. Here you will see a list of options which are: Recent Files, Upload a file, URL downloader, Private files and Wikimedia.

To upload files you created earlier with the Moodle Mobile App choose Private files.

Here is where you will find your photos and other media you uploaded!

Click on the photo/file you want to submit. The image information will open and you will need to click [Select this file] to add it to your submission.

You can do this as many times as your lecturer has allowed.

Once you have finished, click [Save changes]:

You are now ready to submit your assignment!

NOTE: If [Edit submission] is available you can continue to make further adjustments, even after leaving this submission page, up until you are ready to submit your work for marking.

Click Submit!

Click [Submit assignment]

You will be asked to agree to conditions of assessment as this action submits your work for marking and no changes can be made after this.

Quiz Submission: Photos Audio or Video

Quizzes may have files uploaded to Essay question types. 

To submit photos (or other media) which you have already taken via the Moodle Mobile App, you need to login to the eCampus website.

For quizzes click on your quiz activity and click [Attempt quiz now]. The quiz will begin and you will be presented with Question 1. If your lecturer has set the quiz question up to accept file uploads you will see an area where they are added, as in the image displayed below.

To upload from My Private Files you must use the Add... iconAdd File icon

Once you click the file you want to upload another dialog appears. Click [Select this file] to choose and it will be placed into the File submission area.

Choose [Save and continue] to save the uploaded file and any other data you have added.

REMEMBER once you have chosen [Submit all and finish] your work will be submitted for marking and you will not be able to make any further changes.
